David Hathaway is the Founder and President of Eurovision Mission to Europe and has ministered worldwide for over 60 years. In September 2016, he was presented with a medal in the Israeli Parliament, from the United Nations, in recognition of his many years of humanitarian and evangelistic missions in the former Iron Curtain countries and Israel.
After 11 years as a full-time pastor and evangelist in Britain, David's ministry to Russia and Europe began in 1961 when he organised the first ever expedition to Jerusalem by road, through the Iron Curtain countries. Out of this experience, David began smuggling Bibles into Russia and Eastern Europe until, in 1972, he was arrested, tortured and imprisoned in Czechoslovakia. After serving just one year in prison, David was released by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. This miracle and his experience with God in the prison meant that before returning to work in Eastern Europe, David told his story around the world, leading more than a quarter-of-a-million to Christ in just two years.
Over the following 40 years since his release, David's heart has continued to burn for Eastern Europe, the last words of one of his fellow prisoners continually ringing in his ears: 'David, don't forget us. No one knows, no one in the West cares.' In 1976 he organised the successful worldwide campaign for the release of Georgi Vins, a renowned Russian pastor from Kiev, sentenced to long years in a Siberian prison for his faith. After this, David continued to go into the underground churches to preach until eventually, in the 1980s, he began to openly hold services and conferences in the communist countries; this grew and developed throughout the 1990s and 2000s - preaching to tens-of-thousands of people in stadiums and arenas, and broadcasting these services live on television across all Russia, Ukraine and East Europe, with hundreds of thousands responding through the free-phone call centres being operated.
Despite his age, David continues travelling and speaking extensively. Since 2011, David has ministered to Russian Holocaust Survivors and their families living in Israel: in partnership with Israeli public organisations, he provides spiritual and material support; for this work he has received numerous awards and letters of appreciation from the Knesset. Whilst in Ukraine, David organises the annual National Day of Prayer, which is fully supported by every Christian denomination, and recognised by the President of Ukraine.
