Positional Truth - Who We Are In Christ

Programme 3: Positional Truth

Jesus said: “If you continue in My Word, then you are truly My disciples and you shall know the Truth, and the Truthshall make you free” (John 8:32). What is this Truth that we need to know? It is not ET - the truth of our experiences or feelings or natural circumstances, because He said we would only find it in His Word.It is the truth of what God has done for us in the New Birth, as Jesus then said: “If the Son sets you free (from sin), you shall be free indeed” (v36). When we receive Christ, the life of God is imparted to our spirit, we receive eternal life and become a new creation. We are born again. Our spirit has been truly set free from sin by Jesus in the New Birth: “If the Son sets you free you shall be free indeed.” But we must know what Jesus has done for us to walk in the reality of it and enjoy it.

In this series I am sharing this TRUTH with you. Knowing it will change you and your self-image forever.

Proverbs 23:7 says: “as a man thinks in his heart so he is.” I want you to have a good look in God’s mirror and see yourself as God sees you, as you really are in your spirit. This Truth of what God has done in the New Birth is called POSITIONAL TRUTH, because it is what is true about you by virtue of your position IN CHRIST. It is who you are and what you have IN CHRIST, through the New-Birth. KNOWING PT is of great importance for it is the foundational truth we need to change our self-image and build a strong Christian life.

*If we build our faith and christian lives on the solid rock of PT we will have stable fruitful lives, but if we build instead on the shifting sands of our feelings, experiences and circumstances, then the house of our christian life will not survive well through the storms of life.

We must build our life on the foundation of unchanging PT: 2Corinthians 4:17,18: “Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen (ET), but at the things which are not seen (PT). For the things which are seen (ET) are temporary, but the things which are not seen (PT) are eternal.”

To have a strong Christian life and to grow, we need to focus on PT, whatever is happening in our lives. We need to meditate on PT, especially when facing troubles, pressures and afflictions. It is the foundation rock of truth we can base our life on, because it is unchanging (Matthew 7:24-27). Whatever is going on around us, whatever we are feeling, whatever storms hit, we are still a child of God, a new-creation destined for glory etc!

If we base our life and self-image on PT, then our house will stand when the storms hit. Those who build their lives on (spiritual) feelings and experiences are very vulnerable to setbacks.

We don’t live out from our feelings (which change), but from our PT (the unchanging Word).

PT is always true, because we are in Christ (whether we feel it or not). Do not put too much onus on your feelings, but on what the Word says. Feelings come and go, you can’t build your life on them.

*Let’s now look at some more PT about our reborn spirit:

Our old spirit is called the Old-Man, which has been crucified with Christ (Romans 6:6) and our new reborn spirit is the New Man.

Colossians 3:9,10 says: “you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the New Man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”

Ephesians 4:24 says we are now: “the New Man which was created according to God (in His image), in true righteousness and holiness.” Our spirit has been recreated according to the blueprint of Christ, so that it is now in the perfect image of Christ.

Romans 6:6: “knowing this, that our old (spirit) man was crucified with Christ, v8,9 Now if we (the old man) died with Christ, we believe that we (the new man) shall also live with Him (we share His resurrection life), knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him (This says that our new man lives by His indestructible, resurrection life which has conquered death once and for all).

Romans 6:10,11: “For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Realise that your spirit (not your flesh) is risen from the dead, and is dead to sin and alive to God!

Romans 8:9-10: “But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ (or a Christ-like spirit), he is not His. And if Christ is in you (if you are born again),the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is life, because of righteousness.” Our reborn spirit is indwelt by the Holy-Spirit, who imparts to it the nature and life of Christ, so that our spirit is righteous and alive with God’s life. It is alive to God and full of God’s life.

Our new-man has been made alive together with Christ and has been raised with Christ far above all principalities and powers:
Colossians 2:12,13: “you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being (spiritually) dead... He has made alive together with Him.”

This means your new-man has already risen with Christ above sin, death and all the power of satan. The same operation of the power of God that worked in Christ in raising His spirit from death to life, worked in our spirit making it alive together with Christ (imparting the very same life and nature to us as He did to Christ) and raising it above all the power of the enemy (giving our spirit the same victory over sin, satan and death as Christ has!).

Colossians 3:1-4: “If then you were raised with Christ (far above), seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you (your old-man)died, and your life (spirit) is hidden with Christ in God. (and one day it will be fully manifested, for) When Christ who isour life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”

In Ephesians 1:19-21 Paul prays that we might know: “what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.” This power that made Christ alive and raised Him up is the same power that made our spirits alive and raised them up, far above! Our spirit consists of the eternal, indestructible, victorious resurrection life of Christ which has already conquered death and sin!

So, in Ephesians 2:5-6 he applies it to us: “when we were dead in trespasses, (1) He made us alive together with Christ(by grace you have been saved), and (2) raised us up together with Christ, and (3) made us sit together with Christ in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (there were 3 instantaneous operations of God’s power:
(1) He removed all spiritual death and made our spirit alive with Him
(2) He raised our spirit above all sin and demonic force, imparting His victory to it. Your spirit is victorious over sin and satan.
(3) He made our spirit to sit with Him far above, that is He imparted authority and dominion to our spirit over the enemy.

He summarises this all in v8: “For by grace you have been saved through faith (your spirit has already been saved by God’s power!), and that (salvation) is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we (our reborn spirits) are His workmanship (His masterpiece), created in Christ Jesus (designed, equipped, empowered) for good (excellent) works,
which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

*Personal testimony - He wants you to be a success at what you do,
to be good at your job, He created you for good works, not mediocre.

We have seen that we have been made alive and raised with Christ. That is, the same power that raised Christ from the dead was released in our spirits and made them alive and raised them far above every power of sin etc. Thus the origin of the new-man is the resurrection of Christ, and therefore its nature consists of the victorious, resurrection life of Christ, which has already overcome sin, sickness, death, curse, satan and all evil.

Therefore we are overcomers now: “in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).
“For whatever is born of God overcomes the world” (1John 5:4).

Not only do we have an overcoming spirit, but we have the Greater One, the Holy-Spirit indwelling and empowering our spirit: “You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world”
 (1John 4:4).

Confession of PT (all by the grace of God, independant of works).
I am in Christ. I am a born again child of God.
There is no condemnation for me in Christ.
I am one spirit with the Lord.
I have eternal life in me.
God’s life and love is in my spirit.
The life of God is in me.
The love of God is in me.
I am the love child of a love God.
The love of God has been poured into my heart by the Holy Spirit.
God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love & a sound mind.

My spirit is dead to sin and alive to God.
I am a new creation in Christ.
I am a New Man created in God’s image in true righteousness and holiness.
I am God’s workmanship created in Christ for good works.

I am the righteousness of God in Christ.
I am a life-giving spirit!
I am an overcomer. I am more than a conqueror.
Greater is He who is in me, than he who is in the world! PT must become the basis for our life and actions. Any good feelings are a bonus.
